The shepherd dog requires efficient movement to be able to tend sheep for hours and hours where it may trot the entire time. An open shoulder is the most economical way to move. There is a trend for German Shepherd Dogs to be extending from the elbow rather than with an open and full extending shoulder. This will eventually hinder endurance in the shepherd.
